WHAT IS IT ?

I believe UX is not only about building useful and beautiful app. The discipline arose because the business demands requiring new ways to deliver their product & service to customer. The behavior of the customers change in matter of years.

In this project, we were working with the biggest hearing aid retailer in Indonesia to develop new option on how to interact with their customers. From brick wall store, costing billions to low-cost 101 codify digital store, with broader reach. So this is where my Industrial design background playing a role, helping the business requirements and the customer needs to meet the ends. As World Design Organization define:

“Industrial Design is a strategic problem-solving process that drives innovation, builds business success, and leads to a better quality of life through innovative products, systems, services, and experiences.”

A friend of mine. Back in college I had a deaf friend who experienced losing his hearing ability in childhood. I always remember how his hearing problem affecting his daily life and psychology. And how sometimes the others making fun of his disability physically and verbally. None of it nice!!

Problem Statments

“My hearing aid device battery ran out right when I was in the middle of a class that made me missed the rest of the lesson”

“I felt really bad when one day I did not notice that a friend was talking to me because I turned off my hearing aid to save its battery”

“I found a way to provide myself with an emergency hearing aid using a smartphone & an earphone. Too bad that day I left my earphone at home.”

“I think there is something wrong with my hearing & need to have it checked at an ENT clinic but I feel that this is just embarrassing.”

BEFORE WE GOING TOO FAR

Spending millions on this project, is the market valid enough? how exactly it will help the business itself? Fair question needs to be answered. Although this tool (the app) will be a lot cheaper than physical store and clinic, the business needs to spend wisely for every decision right?!

how can it increase the life quality of it’s user ?

Remember the problem statement mention above? those are from real life problem experienced by hearing aid user. Not because the device has low quality, but every product has it’s own limitation.

Good quality hearing aid can be expensive, even for the western market. Not all insurance covers hearing aid claim. And only high-end hearing aid has access to a secondary device such as tablet or mobile phone to improve it’s performance. So the option is, either the user upgrading to the high-end device (if they can afford it) or live with the limitation. Or…if there is a third option such as an mobile app that,
