WBTI : PRESENTATION APP

My accidental first encounter with UX

TECHNICAL

Status : Published in Alpha release
OS : Android
Theme : Design thinking & methodology

Due to NDA agreement, I will only use abbreviation on the project name, blurred all the logos, and text describing place. Some page will be shown in wireframe.

WHAT IS IT ?

The project assignment is actually designing a concept of a theme park in 3D model. The output is 3D video format. The team came out with an idea to present it in an app.

The idea is to use a form of an app as a marketing tools which the content of it, planned to be shown to prospective investors and government officials.

Rather than conventional paper print flyer or video file saved in laptop or USB driver, an app form is a lot more convenience. With designed user flow, the marketing team will not be confuse during a presentation, which video have to be shown next. Since there is about 23 video files to be shown.

The other perk is the marketing team will never lose any file or USB drive. It will always be in the cloud / google play to be download anytime, anywhere, and ready to be projected to any smart tv, tablet, or projector.

DIRECT USER : MARKETING TEAM

DIRECT USER : MARKETING TEAM

1ST GOAL
Immersive experience to the investors of the theme park concept

2ND GOAL
Helping marketing team to deliver the idea

  • User could’t find where the content was
  • User didn’t care to read the description explaining the business concept
  • APK files were too big, with size of 2,5Gb
  • The app as marketing tools should be treated as a product
  • We should consider user age
  • No one in the team had an experience of developing an app
  • Limited communication between app developer and design team due to design team experience in UX
  • First prototype came out not intuitive, it needed to be iterate, but we only had 5 days left to do the process

The team agreed to use Industrial Design approach. Since the discipline is more closer to Enginereing Design & Human Computer Interaction. Which in future project, I still used it to check out my work.

where should we start ?

Unlike engineering, as what my friend said, design is chaotic process that require many testing, failure, or re-design. As Industrial designer, iteration is normal thing, but it can be very expensive especially if the industry is manufacture. Industrial designer has to be able to communicate the issue with the engineer and select carefully where we should start to iterate. This is where UX getting more interesting. The cost to iterate is a lot cheaper compared to Industrial design.

what did we miss?

“Presbyopia is when your eyes gradually lose the ability to see things clearly up close. It is a normal part of aging. In fact, the term “presbyopia” comes from a Greek word which means “old eye.” You may start to notice presbyopia shortly after age 40.”

-Kierstan Boyd, American academy of Ophthalmology-

what did we miss?

what we didn’t see

REAL LIFE

As my professor once said, “Design it correctly first, aesthetic comes later. If you are sucessfull in combining the two of those, it’s called Well design.” Glad I didn’t fall a sleep during that lecture.

design decision

  • Limiting description character to maximum 500 character
  • Move all video button up, over video
  • Minimize all scrolling activity, maximum 2 page scrolling
  • Adding replay button
  • Consistency with visual guidelines
  • Increasing fonts size
  • Move some technical info from description into video
